How licensing works

Keys that can't break a home

Installers told us what goes wrong with driver licensing: cloud check-ins that fail, licences stuck with the old dealer, and fees nobody mentioned. Our keys are built to avoid all three.

From install to licensed

  1. Step 1

    Add the driver

Load the .c4z into Composer Pro like any other driver. It runs on its free key straight away.

  2. Step 2

    Register the controller

Enter the controller's MAC address on our site. That ties the key to that one Control4 system.

  3. Step 3

    Paste the key

Paste the signed key into the driver's Properties in Composer. The driver checks it on the controller itself.

  4. Step 4

    Done for good

No check-ins, no renewals. The driver keeps working if our servers, or the internet, go down.

Pro keys and controller registration open when the licence system launches. Until then, drivers run on their free key. Get told first.

What we promise

Offline keys
Each key is cryptographically signed and checked on the controller. Nothing phones home, so a cloud outage can't switch a client's home off.
A free key on every driver
The basics work without paying. Clients see the driver working before anyone spends money on Pro features.
The licence belongs to the house
If the homeowner changes installer, their drivers stay licensed. Nobody can hold a home's licences hostage.
Free transfers
Controller replaced or upgraded? Register the new MAC and move the key yourself. No fee, no waiting for us.
No subscription for homeowners
A Pro key is a one-off purchase. The only yearly option is the Dealer Partner plan, and that's for installers.

Questions installers ask

What happens if Gorse Labs disappears?

Keys are checked on the controller against a signature, not against our servers, so every key that's already issued keeps working whatever happens to us.

Does the driver ever stop working if a check fails?

No. There is no online check to fail. If a Pro key is missing or doesn't match the controller, the driver drops back to its free features rather than stopping.

Can I use one Pro key on two systems?

No. A key is tied to one controller's MAC address. Each home needs its own key, and moving it to a replacement controller is free.

How do I find the controller's MAC address?

It's printed on the controller's label and shown in Composer Pro. Our install guide on the support page shows where.

Who owns the licence, the dealer or the homeowner?

The home. Keys are registered to the controller in the house, so they stay with the system when a homeowner changes installer.

When can I buy Pro keys?

Soon. We're finishing the licence system now. Register on the pricing page and we'll tell you first, at the launch price.
